Professor Jodie Hunter presents keynote at the British Society for Research in Learning Mathematics for the Janet Duffin award

Professor Jodie Hunter won the Janet Duffin award for the most significant contribution to Research in Mathematics Education journal in 2022 for her article entitled “Challenging and disrupting deficit discourses in mathematics: Positioning young diverse learners to document and share their mathematical funds of knowledge . In association with the award, she has been invited to present a keynote address at the BSRLM Research Day conference focused on the findings of her research. The presentation uses the stories of mathematics at home and in the community from Pacific students from New Zealand and Niue (a small Pacific nation) to highlight what we can learn from the voices of minority communities. The study used an indigenous methodology and draws on data collected from a photo-voice design and story-telling process where students were given cameras to identify, document, and share mathematics from their lives. The findings suggest that such activities provide a tool for educators to grow their understanding of the rich everyday use of mathematics of diverse communities.
